Unhappy 1984 300SD tapping noise, unable to drive.

Hi I'm brand new to this forum, and relatively new to the 84 300SD, I purchased this vehicle last september, and I had numerous problems throughout the winter due to a faulty starter that I replaced fairly recently. This past sunday my poor car broke-down on interstate 81. I only had about an 1/8th of a tank of diesel in the vehicle, I was going approximately 60 mph and running at about 4,000 rpm...when i let off the gas the car just decided to shut-off. After attempting to add more fuel and restart it successfully, it would just continually shut-off on me. After having it towed to my house, I removed the air-filter and casing from the vehicle leaving the air to flow directly into the intake...When I can get it started, it runs extremely rich...lots of black smoke and makes a tapping noise that seems pretty consistent as i accerate in neutral and slowly let off the pedal. If I let off completely the car shuts off. Sometimes it will allow me to shift into reverse or drive, and take her for a spin up and down my long driveway, however it seems to be lacking power. I've been told to check the fuel injectors, and i've read a tutorial on how to do so. Are there other possibilities as well? Before I dive head first into this project I figured it would be smart to ask some folks who have way more experience with diesels than I do....as to what the protocol is for correcting this problem. I'm hoping its correctible.
