Unable to go above 2700RPM

Unable to go above 2700RPM
I have a 1997 E320 automatic. Strangest problem I have ever had. When you reach 2700 or so RPMs, car starts shaking and hesitating. Not able to go above 80MPH. Does it in all gears, most annoying on highway though, because it won't shift again to lower the RPMs. For some reason the car just rufuses to go above 2700RPMS. Maybe some time of computer or relay problem, I have no idea. Any help is greately appreciated.

Hi,
Is your Yellow Check Engine light on? (Ensure that this light works when you turn the ignition ON to make sure the bulb is OK)
If the light is ON when you are driving this warns that there is an engine emmissions related malfunction which requires garage attention. The garage or enthusiast will first need to get the on board computer scanned for Trouble Codes.

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to try and change that filter. Car has 125K on it, not sure if it has ever been done. If that doesn't work I am going to bring it to a garage. No ckeck engine light though. I'll keep you posted how I make out. Don't think I'll be able to get it done till monday though.

Keep us posted.
Very strange if there is no CEL. Wonder if there are any codes?
If the car is "shaking / hesitating" I'm surprised the crank sensor isn't picking this up as a misfire.
Stuart.

Well, I changed my fuel filter. But that didn't solve the problem. I really don't mind, I needed to change it anyways. That was on Monday. Wednesday, the check engine light finally came on. Problem seems the same, no better no worse. Looks like it's going to the shop. Going away for the weekend, so some time next week. I'll keep you all posted on how I make out.
