Default 1997 ABS/ASR Failure

I have a 1997 SL320. Occasionally, while braking, the ABS and ASR failure indicator lights come one. They remain on until the car is restarted. While they are on, the ABS, ASR and cruise control do not work. The manual says when the ABS stops working, the ASR automatically fails as well so I think the problem it with an ABS sensor. It sounds like an easy fix that I would like to do myself and any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Hank

Still haven't been able to figure this one out. I figured I would mention that the problem typically only happens when I brake in reverse and when braking lightly.

If you take the car to a dealer, they ought to be able to very quickly diagnose the problem through diagnostics. That said, you might simply try replacing the brake lamp switch. It is a common cause of the problem you describe, is inexpensive, and is easy to replace yourself.

Additionally, the problem only happened when braking lightly, heavy braking did not set off the sensor.

The problem was fixed by removing the two front vehicle speed sensors and cleaning the metal shaving debris that was stuck to the magnet on the sensor. The task is easy. See the picture.
