I bought a used 1999 SL500 in Sept 2005 from the Los Angeles area. The car has 21000 miles on it. I've been told that there are Calif. emisions and possibly other things that are required on Calif. cars that aren't required on cars in other states, that limit the performance. Any suggestions or info would be appreciated. I'm in Illinois.

 

as far as i know, all cali. cars must meet the cali. emissions standards which appear to be more strict than i think any other state...i suppose maybe good if you are taking it to another state (did this with an old taurus years ago) like you to ILLinois. so it most likely far exceed your state's requirements, but may have some extra 'stuff' on it. also, as far as i know it is all emissions related (but not performance related) but the emission things may (probably) will affect some performance... my brother used to be a cali. inspector and mechanic. if the car EVER tries to be sold again in Cali...if you did any mods that cannot be re done...forget about selling it there...again, as far as i know. a fellow 1999 SL500 owner
