Default !999 ML320 does not start on occasion

This is a good one that is driving me nuts.
The car runs perfect when it does starts up and while it's running.
But about twice a week if I drive it around and I make a quick 30 min stop somewhere, when I come back to start it up, it turns over but it doesn't start.
It goes through the crank cycle just fine, but it it's almost like there is no fuel or spark, its just turning over without a hint of wanting to start.
I walk away from it for a few hours and when I try it again it starts right up and it runs great.
I can't think of anything that will cause this random problem or where I should start looking.

Any ideas ?

hi, I have the same problem...but don`t die to me when running...I noticed that, in short distance of travelling, it will not start (just keep on cranking)...wait for a while and it will start...just changed the 12 spark plugs (original)...could you tell me where I can find the CRANK SENSOR of 2001 ML320? and could you email me the picture of the Crank Sensor? Thanks and appreciated....my email address is voltairemedina@***.net...

ok, did you fix the problem? how did they know that the coil pack is the problem..did they diagnosed it? i was told that they have to diagnosed to find what is the problem, could be cranks sensor, could be coil, could be fuel pump...once they perform the diagnostic, they will know what parts to be needed to change...it will cost me $85.00 for diagnostic...pls. update me with your problem...thanks

Johnny is right on the button!
Any one of the 6 coil packs going bad will turn on the CEL (check engine light) and code for cylinder missfire.
Crankshaft position sensor will have to cool off for a while to let you restart the vehicle and it will be fine till next shut off.
98-99 A 003 153 96 28 Bosch 0 261 210 141 (two locking tabs one on each side for connector).
00-on A 003 153 27 28 Bosch 0 261 210 171 (single locking tab in the middle for electric connector).
Seach google for position and replacement instructions, plug and play easy DIY job.

Default Problem with CPS

It was the CPS, I will be fixing it soon. Did any one find a easier way to replace it other than taking the wheel off? Thank you everyone for all the help you have given me. Im glad I found this site
