Default extremely tight steering

I was wondering if anyone has run into this problem on their E320. I have a 2001 4Matic with 83K miles that i recently purchased. The steering was fine at that time (very responsive). Just this weekend I realized that the steering has gotten extremely tight almost to the point that I have to use both my hands to turn when the car is stationary. I've tried flushing the fluid with Mercedes power steering fluid but its hasnt made any different. The fluid level also seems normal and there doesnt seem to be any fluid leakage (no spots left behind under the car). At this point I dont know what to do other than taking it to a Mercedes authorized service center but I dread to think of what that will cost me. Any suggestions???

I have an older 4matic wagon ('92) and so I can't speak exactly for your model, but I also have a filter down in the power steering reservoir. If you had the same and it was dirty and/or plugged, maybe that would give you the symptoms you describe. It's a cheap try/fix weighed against the 'stealer. If you reach this point, try a indie MB shop if you have one. They're not in the business of making you feel like you need a new car every two yrs or that you'll only get 'respect' if you do.

I would suggest disengaging the 4matic and see if the steering issue goes away...might provide insight....
