Vario roof not opening

Vario roof not opening
Hi just bought a 1997 SLK with a view to fixing it up for the summer unfortunately the roof will not open. When the roof switch is operated it flashes red but nothing else happens. If the switch is pressed into the close position the pump can be heard operating and the roof moves fractionally towards the closed position.
The other thing is that the windows do not drop and the rear windows do not go down even using the window switch.
I am aware that there are numerous micro switches and it feels like a switch has failed but I have searched the internet for a good diagnosis guide but failed miserably.
I don't want to open the roof manually in case I can't get it closed.
I would appreciate any advice or help

Hello and welcome to the forum - take a look at the link below and check out all the DIY tech articles on the SLK - there are several more on the roof and doors. Let us know if you have any other questions or if we can assist with any future part needs. Thanks.

generally if a top won't open it will be the 2 micro-switches where the top latches. the pin micro-switch that lines the top up and tells the car the top is closed should be replaced too. you can see that switch with flashlight. common issues. once the visors are off the cover just pulls off, it's has clips holding it on. pull back toward the rear.

Can any body help please, I am trying to trace the three wires from the micro switch on the boot latch, to ??? Does one go to pin 52? I have had all the latch apart, micro switch seems to be working.
Roof not opening, luggage cover switch seems OK.
regards
Brian

thanks for the reply, but, I am still needing to trace the three wires omitting from the trunk lid catch, I may have a break in a wire, separating the plug from the micro switch, would enable me to check for continuity,
