Default old SL reliability

I've always loved the 1970-80 ish SL's and I'm thinking of buying one. Any suggestions as far as reliability? Thanks.

They are great cars and if you find one that has been maintained they will be fairly reliable.
Keep in mind that anything mechanical will eventually wear out - especially after 20-30 years of working.
There are just going to be things that will happen.....just like people it just takes more to keep old cars running.

These cars were also designed to see the mechanic more frequently than cars built more recently.

I don't think you would have problems with the engine/trans (again, assuming maintenace was done and timing chain has been monitored) - you will have issues with climate control, vacuum locks/air direction controls and depending on year, the exhaust system.....

Good luck!

If it feels good do it! Life is short, get what you want and enjoy it, when it becomes more of a burdon than you wish to take on dump it!

My personal take on enjoying life!!!

gianigreco,

In owning a 560SL for over 10 years, my collective wisdom can be summed up in a few statements....

o First, there is no such thing as a 'cheap' Mercedes. Expect to get what you pay for.
o With the 107's, its the quality of the maintenance, not the miles on the odometer that determines the value of the car
o Don't even think about buying one without a PrePurchase Inspection by a knowledgeable pro MB Independent Tech. Find the best guy you can from referrals from other owners in your area; go meet him now and let him know that you're in the market for a good 107. He willbe your new best friend-

Bob
