I just purchased this S500 and was checking things out and found the alternator bearings to be wasted. So after I got it out I noticed the smaller wires insulation was burned off of it for about an inch or so. Is this common? Also I have been reading and noticed that when I reconnect the battery I have to reset several things. Is there an exact procedure I have to follow? And what is it? The new alternator wont be in until tomorrow so the car will be disconnected over twenty four hours if that matters.

 

I forgot to mention its a 1995 model.
