Default what engine oil to use?

I recently purchased a S500 1995 and am going to change the engine oil. The car has 140K miles on it. I would like to get alot of miles out of this car so I would like to know from some of you that have a high mileage car and what oil you use that has gotten you to the 200k 300k mile mark. Also what filters you use.

I suggest Mobil 1 0-40 for that car.

Well sir, I've heard a lot of things as it pertains to the type of oil to put in our engines. As my signature will show you, I presently own a '97 S420, and I live in NC, USA. I have only and have always used 15W40 in my automobile. Some have suggested I switch to 10W30, 10W40, 0W40 and all of this other stuff. I can't say which is right, wrong, or indifferent. But what I can say is that, I've only used 15W40 which is what a MB German Mechanic recommended to me, and I've stuck with it ever since. The automobile now has 259K on the clock, and still strong. Best to you with whatever you choose.

The mid-90s V8 engines are not as sensitive to oil as the newer cars. I don't think there is any issue of damage if you use almost any good oil and change it before the stuff wears out.

The 0-40 has a much stronger detergent package that the heavier oils, and it will do a better job of cleaning out deposits from an older motor.

Surprisingly, the 0-40 also often leaks less because it's thicker hot.

If you choose to use an oil like 15-40 I'd keep in mind that those older weights were not made for extended intervals so I'd be changing it out at 5,000 miles.
