Default Stall/start problem

98 E320, 108K mi. The car has been headache-free for a year. The other day, I tried to pass someone on the turnpike after about 45 minutes @ highway speed and the car stalled. Several attempts had the starter turning, but it wouldn't restart. Waited 5 minutes, turned the key, and it turned over like nothing happened. Drove another 45 minutes @ 75 mph, made a stop and when I got in the car, same thing. Took it to my very reputable tech, and there were no error codes & the problem couldn't be duplicated. Picked the car up, went to dinner, made another stop and !VIOLA! it wouldn't start. This time I released the key from the 3rd to the 2nd position, and the car kept trying to start itself. Several attempts were futile. After 5 minutes of sitting, the car turned over without a hitch.

Has anyone a clue? It sounds like a chip problem, but without any error codes, I don't know. It only seems to happen when the car is at operating temperature. TKG.

crank sensor may be taking a crap. they only set current codes on that vehicle they usually wont store. and they are very inconsistant on when they went to work when they start going bad. but that shouldnt make the vehicle stall when accelerating.

this sounds like the classic (and I mean classic) example of the notorious crankcase position sensor that rmf0102 alluded to. relatively cheap and easy fix. the symptoms are described over and over and over on the various MB boards and should be high on the list of possible causes.

search other high traffic MB boards for similar ailment(s)...
