Default Rusty Lug Bolts

I just bought an '02 E320 4MATIC and the jug bolts are rusted. The dealer (not an MB dealer) said that there was a recall on these at some point. Now that the warranty is over, what are my options? New ones, caps????

do you know the size? can you photo yours or measure? i just happen to have a set of (20) in a box i was going to put on Ebay. what i have are: 14mm diameter bolt, 1" thread, 14mm ball seat, 17mm hex head. these are from a W211 E55.

i acquired these thinking it would work for me but what i really needed for my car (99 E320) was 12mm diameter, not 14. so if you're interested, drop me email: waltermitty01@juno.com $30 shipped (package a bit on the heavy side). all of the bolts are similar in condition. no rust. insofar as your reference to recall.....whether it covers the bolts i have or not....I dont know. they are MB issue and has the MB star on the heads.

my Ebay id is: waltrmitty

ps. just checked and didn't see any recalls for lug bolts for 2000 E320. but i did see this TSB...no biggie

Hi,
Don't know much about wheel retention bolts (lugnuts to you over there) but my own experience suggests that the design of the bolt has been changed many times.

I'm sure that cost down has been in the list of reasons but corrosion (rust) is another.

The bolts on my 00m/y S and SLK are "short" so the flanks of the head are not visible when they are recessed into the alloy wheel. The top of the head has a brazed on Nickel / Chrome cap which is sufficiently robust that it will not rust since this is the only bit which can be seen once fitted.. The flanks are quite rusty but cannot be seen.

Even new bolts will start to rust on the flanks due to contact with the socket used to tighten them damaging the (thin) plating.

Be VERY careful with wheel bolts. They may fit but the material they are made from, what they have been used for etc. can be the difference between life and death. Plating bolts to make them look smart can seriously effect (adversely) their strength.

Stuart.

That's two words. Lug nuts, not "lugnuts."

I accept the correction.

So what's a Lugnut?

Is a Lugnut unique or a type?

...................

Have a look at my latest post on S Class. Think I may have picked something up which is significant and where the UK appears to be the underdog.
