Help water pump!
My 94 E420 was leaking water really bad yesterday. I found that it is the water pump. Has anyone ever replaced a water pump. How easy? How is it taken off? One last question off subject. Does anyone know where the timming chain is located? Thank you in advance.
Heres the thing about Mercedes water pumps. They have whats called a "weep hole" which helps if the engine coolant system builds up too much pressure some how. Check and see (first) if your thermostat is malfunctioning. Removal of the waterpump is pretty simple. Remove the fan first, and the belt and all of course. Then its usually 3 bolts and it'll come right off. Make sure you get a new gasket before putting a new pump or even the old pump back on.
I haven't worked on any E420s, but heres the scoop:
Under the waterpump there is a cover, its called the timing cover. Remove that, and the seals, and you will see your timing chain and gears running from the crank to the cam. Be careful not to bump the engine off time.
