Default Gearbox Limp Home Mode E320 CDI 2001 W210

My E320 CDI Turbo 2001 W210 WITH 113,000 MILES is stuck in first gear (limp Home Mode)

I have tried to reset it by disc the negative on the battery terminal and depressing the brake pedal for one minute but to no avail. It is still stuck in first gear.

I took it to an indie and after it going on the computer they said it was either of two things showing up a) the diff ratio in the gearbox & b) the gearbox ecu.

They didn't mention the gearbox module selector butI am just wondering if the module selector controlls the diff ratio??? and whether I should change that as I think that the module selector is a common problem.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

What makes you think it is in Limp Home.
Is the CEL on?
Are any codes other than the two you mention present?
See response on other post.

Thank you Stuart for getting back so promptly.

There are no CEL's on.

I think the car is in Limp Home Mode as it's not changing gears at all now nor can you change the tip manually. The car at first would not change gears but then if you switched it off and then restarted it then it would be fine, this happened intermitently for a couple of weeks but now it is constantly stuck in what seems like first or second gear.

Also now that it is stuck in gear and you move the selector say from P to Drive or N to drive or vice versa it would jerk like it's not going into gearsmoothly. This also happened before when it did it intermitently but when you restarted the car it would be a smooth gearchange as it should be.

Hope this sheds some light as to this fault history. A fewmembers posts on here suggestto try thegearbox ECU and check the cables for oil and a few posts on here suggest that it could be the speed sensor modulator. Just wondering if you think the symptons could be the gearbox ECU or speed sensor.

really value your opinion.

Tony

Not sure that I have anything to add.

I believe the CEL will illuminate when you go into Limp Home.

Were the codes cleared. Do the same ones come back.

Oil level OK? Oil last changed (Genuine MB)? ECU connections OK?

No reason to doubt the Indie shop. ECU's are usually extremely reliable unless they get wet!!

I too have the same problem, no solution or cheat codes to reset the limp home mode?

I have a W210 E230 SW 1996.
Speedsensor 3 have been the problem the past weeks, no connection on when it occurs.
Cant reset it by turning of the engine, just with a diagnose machine.

After diagonose reset, an error saying P and R safety, but not why and what.
After the reset the car runs normal from a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Workshop appointment booked next week, but in the meantime, is this likely the known electrical plate that are know to be week on these cars, or could it be something else?

Workshop says the reason it wont reset by switching of the ignition is that the R and P code blocks it from the normal reset procedure...
What do you think?

Could it be likely that the R and P code disappears when the electronic plate are replaced, or is it no change at all that they are related to each other?

Thx Chris
