Antenna seal

Antenna seal
Trying to help my elderly neighbors, who have an 86 Mercedes 300E. The upper/outter radio seal was hard, and deterriated from the sun and crumbling. I purchased the inner and outter seals at a local Mercedes garage, using the vin #, so am sure the parts are right. The original inner seal was torn, so I ended up pushing all the old seal out. After trying for an hour to get the inner seal installed, I now believe the antenna must be removed, at least the mast. I am in this deeper than I want to be, but sort of owe it to them to get this repaired. Am I right in assuming it would be easier to remove the antenna, install the seal, then reinstall the antenna thru the new seal? What's involved in removing the antenna, haven't found any instructions on the internet.

the antenna comes out easy. its like 2 phillips screws and just pull down on the whole antenna, it will pop/slide out of the antenna seal. there also might be a nut/screw at the bottom of the lower/inner seal. if your somewhat mechanically inclined youll figure it out. thr trunk liner comes out very easy to.
