Default Reliability of C220 vs. C280

Hi all,
I am thinking of purchasing a new(er) Mercedes. I've found two C series, both in excellent condition and one owner cars. One is a 1996 C220 with 90K miles, the other is a 1999 C280 with 115K miles. Is the C series a reliable car with a 'sound' engine?
I am looking for a daily driver that I can take on the occasional road trip, I don't need a fast engine (I'm used to driving a diesel Mercedes).

I'm not as familiar with these vs. diesel engines and I can't seem to find many online reviews on these.
Many thanks!

check mbworld.org, there's a large W202 (C-Class) following there. Personally, I'd go for a C280.
