transmission fluid change procedure

Default transmission fluid change procedure

Any tips or advice or anything special I should look for before I change transmission fluid on my 98 e320? thank you

Why do you want to change it?
MB trans are ealed for life.
OK if the car has done more than 100k miles or is used under heavy operating conditions (Towing / High Ambients) may be beneficial BUT YOU MUST USE MB GENUINE TRANS FLUID (expensive).

DO NOT use usual Dextron etc or you will start to get problems. BE WARNED.
There is something special (I wish I knew what/why) about the MB fluid. Colour, viscosity, feel, smell etc are all different.

I have been havingtroubles with it and it has 135 k and I do use it a lot and I drive it very hard. Transmission has been acting up and after I aded some it has been doing better. I did get MB fluid aswell kit and it was not as bad as I expect it( little over $ 100 for all) I also got transmission dipstick for it.

another question....i am starting to become little boring ;-) sorry
after taking tranny oil pan out i found some metal shavings and what it looks like little bars ( about 2-3 milimeters long)and after taking filter I found some in the filter aswell....Any ideas what these are? should I be worried?

Oh Dear!

Your description sounds like gear teeth but this would be unusual.

How about taking a photo of them.

THE BITS LOOK MORE LIKR THEY ARE FROM HYDRO ELECTRIC PAD,THIS GEAR BOXES DONT HAVE ANY BIG TEEHT IN THEM THEY MAINLY HAVE ALOT OF BRAKE BANDS EXP,CLUTCH K1,CLUTK2,K3,K4..WHEN FILLING OIL PLEASE PLEASE,DO NOT OVER FILL IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 5 LITERS,RUN ENGINE TO TEMP OF 90DEGRESS,THEN RE CHECK OIL LEVEL OIL LEVEL SHOULD BE ON THE POINTER OF 90 DEGRESS ON YOUR DIP STICK,,,,,,,,,AFTER FIILIN OIL DRIVE CAR TILL IT RECHES 90 ON TEMP THEN CHECK OIL ITS MORE ACURATE .........MB TEC,PRESENT ,WITH MB 16YRS NAZ

I did just like you said..I filled it and checked a nd drove around and checked again all together I used 7.3 liter of transmission fluid.( I drained tourque convertor aswell) It acts lot better except there is grinding noise when I let off gas pedal and let it roll.. and it does make same noise when I am almost at stop....

Hi,

Oh dear!

Looks like you have changed the trans oil OK BUT bits like in the pic should not be floating around within the trans.

It doesn't really matter where they come from something is obvious not right and to correct it will require a trans rebuil (at best).

The pic is rather small but they look somewhat like roller needles from a bearing but this is a guess.

The box does have gears in it but these gears are constantly meshed and are of a different type to a conventional manual gearbox.
Gear changes are effected (as Naz states) by application or release of brake bands which grip the epicycli gear" clusters. Asd a consequence bits of brake band debris can sometimes be found in the oil but these pieces do not fit the bill.

If I'm correct the noise you are hearing is due to the failed bearing and this will continue to deteriorate and eventually cause a major failure. The longer the bits float around and the bearing runs, the more damage will be done.
