Default Broken Sunroof C230 coupe

Last week, a spring popped in my sunroof and my roof would only close halfway. I took it to a Benz dealer and they told me that the spring is not replaceable and that the entire roof assembly would have to be replaced at a total cost of $3,000 ($2,000 parts, $1,000 labor).

Car is a 2003 with only 27,000 miles on it. When we asked our service tech if MB might cover part of the cost since the mileage is so low, he spoke with the regional manager of Mercedes and even though the car is not covered under warranty, they are willing to give us $500 off. We did gave a dealer coupon for 10% off of parts and labor, but they won't let us use it in conjuntion with Mercedes' offfer. To us, MB's offer, is really only worth $200.

Currently the roof is closed, but unfunctional, and the service manager said that it "shouldn't leak".

In light of this, I have a few questions:

1. Does this assesment (replacing the whole thing) seem necessary? If so, does the price seem right?
2. Do you think that if we fought harder, we could get MB to cover more of the cost?
3. Does it seem feasble that we coild find a non-dealer garage to repair it? Can a non-dealer garage get the part for less than MB is saying that it will cost us?
4. Should we choose not to repair it, would the net decrease in resale value really be $3,000?

My golden add on question:
5. Why on earth would MB create a sunroof where, when a spring pops, it costs 3 grand to fix? As you can tell, I'm thoroughly aggrivated with this.

I would greatly appreciate any insight that anyone canshed on our problem.

Thanks!
Kim

sorry to say this, the spring is not replace able due to its compressed with the rod so if the revets have broke, its not repair able,it will need complete,if only it was in uk they would have done a goodwill ,so you only had to pay half or probble less for that kind of mileage and year..............

Hi, i have had a similar prob with my 230 Komp coupe... spring popped out about a year ago... went to MB said it would cost a bit ??? so left it...also my car has only done about 25K & is a 2001 model... SInce then the prob seems to have rectified itself.. i can now open & close the sun roof without the spring popping up. seems to have wedged itself back in & all works fine with no leaks! Good luck with yours.

Believe it or not mine just did the same thing. I haven't call MB yet to see if its considered under warrenty, but seems like it would be being a 2006 with only 35000 miles on it. I had to help mine closed while I was in dallas, just a little extra nudge as it was closing.
