Default 1995 C280 Questions

Thanks in advance for any responses. I have a 1995 C280 that needs a trans service. The last service was done 30,000 miles ago, and in looking at the trans fluid, the tech said it smelled a little burned and was not the "red" color of trans fluid. The car shifts fine. The questions are:

1---I assume I should get the trans fluid changed. Right?

2---This garage has a machine that flushes out the trans fluid and puts in the new fluid. I assume this is ok for a Benz as well?

3---Should I buy amy special trans fluid, or have the garage use their typical bulk fluid?

4---I drive about 800 miles / week. Should I still get the trans service done every 30,000 miles?

5---Is there any benefit to using full synthetic oil Vs. a blend or regular oil when I get the oil changed.

6---I noticed that when the fan kicks on on this car it is really noisy...no rattling, just noisy. I assume this is normal?

Thanks.

Hello JRR,

what C280 exactly is it?
202.028 or 202.029 ?
(see the first six numerics from Your VIN)

1) You should get changed the ATF, if it smells burned.
Burned smell always comes from very heavy duty to the Automatic-Transmission

2) Your AT has a drain at the converter and at the oilpan. The oilpan must be removed to change the Oilfilter anyway.
It is always good to see the rest of the drained oil in the oilpan to check if there are maybe cuttings in it !

3) it depends on the installed AT. Check Your service-book (last side at the datasheet) which AT ist installed. It can be one of the following versions:

722.328
722.424
722.436

722.604
722.605
722.606
722.629

All 5-gear ATs 722.6xx need the MB-ATF 3353 (to sheet MB 236.12, DEXRON III), which is really the best ATF for these ATs.
Your MB-workshop will have it storing.

4) if Your ATF got burned within the last 30.000 Miles - yes!
Otherwise an interval of 50.000 would also be alright

5) You need the mineral ATF like the MB-ATF 3353 for all ATs 722.6xx.
Full synthetic ATF is not approved for this ATs!
But the MB-ATF 3353 is an excellent choice

6) The radiator-fan has an visco-coupler, which normally doesn´t make particular noise.
Did You check it already?
Did You also check the fan itself?
Otherwise it is the normal sound of the fan

Greetings

Thanks for the reply. It is Mercedes Model C280 (202 028). he type of AT is 722 424, so would the ATF 3353 still work?

So the tech at the garage says the AT Filter is metal and does not need to be changed...is this true???

Trans filter is a paper one housed in a tin casing, bolted to the trans.

It fills up with crap same as any other filter, and should be changed.

Particulalrly if the fluid smells 'burnt'.
