hello! i am new to mercedes diesels, so i need advice. i founda nice looking 220D for sale with a 4 speed and i would like to know what to look for and what to watch out for when buying older mercedes diesels. any help is appreciated

 

also, what kind of mpg's should i expect?

 

I have an 82 240D and although it will NEVER win a race, it does get 27 MPG's consistently. Very dependable cars, but like I stated, they are slow. I have heard they will get low to mid 30 for milage, but I do mostly highway driving so I am guessing the higher R's net me less MPG's. I am thinking of doing a rear diff swap to lower the revs.

 

I have had two of these cars (W115)

They are geared quite a bit lower than the later version (W123) and also weigh less

If you don't have a lot of rust (these cars are traps for it) and it cold starts good, you should be fine. Both of mine got up to 32 mpg with a top speed of about 75
