Default 240D Sunroof Stuck

I have an '82 240D with an electric sunroof. This car is new to me but I have owned one in the past. The sunroof was working fine until a couple of days ago. Now it is stuck in the closed position. The motor works, but it just "click, click, clicks" on the cable, sounds like the gear is just skipping over the ridges on the cable. It does the same thing when you try to open it manually with the tool that comes with the car. I've removed the gearbox and motor and disassembled and it appears to be in good shape. The cable itself looks good too. I've also tried (not very aggressively though) to pry open the sunroof with a plastic tool. Doesn't budge.

I would love to hear any advice or opinions or lessons learned from others. I am not sure what else to do to diagnose this problem. With what I can observe, I would say that the sunroof is somehow "jammed" into place. It would seem that with the gearbox and motor detached from the cable, that the sunroof should be able to be slid back by pushing on it. Or it would seem that you could grap the cable and pull the sunroof open - neither of which work.

Ideas??
