Default What weight oil do you use?

Just curious. In my other cars I'm not so particular 10-30. But the 230 I want to last a while. Any suggestions? Mobil 5w-30 fine? Different set up in winter? If so why? Thanks for any replies.

Why 5w-50? Is that what's recommended?

Hi,
I just don't understand why this question keeps on being asked.
Why don't you use the MB recommended oil as stated in the handbook!!
With all the problems associated with incorrect (sorry non recommended) specification oils being used in the USA I would have thought that the message would have got home.
Although MB lost the Class action on use of non recommended oils it goes to show how sensitive modern engines can be to the use of non recommended oils.
Why does anybody want to use oil that is not recommended?
If you think a particular oil is better than the recommended then go ahead and use it but don't be surprised if problems arise (possibly VERY expensive) and don't expect MB to honour it warranty.
MB (and all manufactureres) test cars and engines for tens of thousands of miles in normal road usage (which is VERY different to the race track) to ensure no hidden problems (premature wear, sludging, acid build up, varnish etc) are lurking.

So, since I never had a handbook...what should we use? Moble one only? How about the new high mileage version? Do we use different weights for different outside temps? I am used to bikes which have evolved from heavy std oils to 20w-50 synthetics. Thanks for the input.

Good grief.......its a simple question deserving a simple answer. Any R170 is a used car and some of us do not have the luxury of a local MB dealer or a manual to guide us. So without being chided any further, who is using what oil in their 230, 320, 32? I'm sure that not everyone is using the same thing.

Hi BikerDrew.
I didn't intend to offend with my reply. You caugth me at a bad moment!
If you can send me a PM I will send a copy of the recommended oil sheet out of my handbook R170 320. It doesn't mean that their is only one oil which is permitted. It refers to a spec rather than a brand.
Unfortunately for whatever reason I am unable to upload pics to this web site. I resize them etc but still no joy. By email its easy.
Hope this will b e helpful.
Stuart.
