Unhappy tire noise

I have a low milage 2004 sl 500 with the original michline pilot sport tires that are so noisy i don't enjoy driving the car. They have 10,000 miles on them but i think i need to replace them. Anyone had a similiar problem or have a recomendation on repacements?

As i know from tires dealers , those must be replaced after 4 years because the material is degraded. But it may not be your problem.Try to describe this noise.Maybe you should to echilibrate your wheels?

Default tires

i just replaced the tires on my 03 sl with the michelin pilots
and they are somewhat noisy, i think it is the nature of the compound
for that type rated tire... but certainly the noise is not a bad as that
you are describing..

I recently replaced my tires on a 96 SL 500 with Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S H rated. They aren't as quiet as the worn Michelin MXV4's that I took off but they were recommended as being a quiet tire. I have the 2010 CU Buyers Guide suggesting no tires are rated better for noise. About 7 tires are rated VG, the rest are good or fair. I have no complaints although one tire had to be replaced because the tread squirmed and it wouldn't balance.

You didn't mentioned whether they have been noisy since new or whether this is a new problem. However, tires beyond 5 years old start to harden and small cracks may start to appear inthe tread. They will get worse as time goes on especially if they are exposed to a lot of sunlight (i.e. not garaged, for example), electrical motors etc. But often, just time destroys the flexibility of the rubber and they may sound a lot noisier as a result. Your low mileage should have no bearing on the problem.
The Pilots are usually favorably rated.
