The hardtop is stuck on my 1999 SL500. The post on the left side won't go all the way down.Won't come off either. You can hear it unlock, but, it won't come off or go on.How do you get it to release?

Check the fluid level at the pump in the trunk; replenish as necessary; try switch again.

Ifyour post refers to theleft side front latch and itstill won't release, use the tool in the toolbag (that has an allen key on one end and an open end wrench on the other) and using the allen key, first remove the small oval plastic cover in the header behind the visor, insert key and turn. This will manually open the latch as far as it will go, and you should now be able to remove the top.

These steps with pictures to manually open/close the top are in the owner's manual if you've got one or can borrow one.

Thanks SunGuy62. However, it is the left rear that did not close properly. The right side latched, the left side didn't. Both front latches secured, as well. There must be a way to manually release the rearlatch as well. I'll try the hydraulic fluid first.

I bought an owner's manual when I bought the car. It is an "after market" version and is definately no good. I need a service manual.

just to the left of the trunk hinge there is a spot to put the open end of the top tool that come in the cars tool kit. use a flash light so you can get a good look back in there.the end of the spot is red or obvious where it goes on. make sure the tool is fitted all the way on and pull down to lock.
