sl500 engine ticking sound
I have a 1997 (40th Anniversary Edition) sl500 with 70,000 miles. A few weeks ago my engine started ticking (sounds like a sticking lifter). My mechanic said there are plastic oil guides that direct the oil being pumped through the engine that break. He wants over $1000.00 to fix it. I have never heard of anything like this before, and with only 70,000 miles and full documentation for every service it's hard to believe I need any kind of major engine repair. Has anyone heard of these plastic oil guides or does anyone have any advice
Thanks,
Larry

RE: sl500 engine ticking sound
you must have a 119 engine.
that plastic cost $1 each. that's about $20 all.
replacing it takes 1 hour for an average handyman.
better replace the cyl head cover gasket too.

RE: sl500 engine ticking sound
Thanks for the info! I have always taken my Mercedes to my mechanic because i've had a fear of working on it and always wanted proper documentation. I work on all my other cars. I think that this is the start of me working on my Mercedes. I always thought my mechanic was very reasonable (he is compared to the dealer) but $1000.00 for this job is crazy.
Sleepwalker and R129 I owe you one.
Thanks again.
