Considering buying a classic sl
Hello,
I am considering buying a classic Mercedes Sl in the next 6 months or so, and was hoping for a bit of advice. The kind of thing I am looking at is a late 1970's early 1980's 350SL or similar.
I'm not set on that engine, so my first question is there an engine 'to have'? one thats nicest to drive or most reliable? (I live in england and petrol costs nearly a pound a litre (over $7 a gallon for you US lot!!)) so I don't especially want the sl500!
This isn't my first old german classic - I own an old golf gti which is anything but relliable, so my next question is how relliable are these things? Am I going to end up spending what the car cost to buy every year in repairs (like I do with my golf)?
And my final question is are there any good online buying guides? things to look out for?
Thanks in advance.

This site has a lot of different posts and is a good place to start seeing what you will run into with whatever you decide. Reading some of the earlier posts and up to current should provide a lot of information.
