Cluster removal

Cluster removal
I have a 1987 MB 560sl. I am trying to get the cluster out to remove and repair the odometer. I can get it about 90% out from the dash, but it appears that in order to remove it all the way, the steering wheel needs to be removed. Is this true or is there a way to get the cluster all of the way out? If the steering wheel needs to be removed, how do you loosen that 10mm hex bolt that seems to be held in with lock-tight or something? Thanks for the help.

RE: Cluster removal
The short answer is, yes, the steering wheel has to come off to get the cluster out. Use the search tool found just under the mast head at the top of the page, and search on 'steering wheel removal', you'll find all you need.
For sure, you'll need the socket for the wheel nut, a breaker bar/extension, a way other than putting the car in park, to secure the steering wheel in place, strength, and care not to send the breaker bar through your rearview mirror, winshield, roof or whatever.
FWIW, a good indy tech can get this off in about 5-10 minutes. Your choice-
