'96 320SL (R) AC control - how do I turn on AC?

I have a 96 SL500. If the AC is the same it works as follows.
Adjust the thumbwheel to a colder temperature (blue shows on the wheel).
Push the automatic button.
Since this is automatic and temperature controlled, you can move the thumbwheel for warmer or colder temps. The 1-4 buttons are for higher fan speeds (faster cooling) and the arrows are for which vent you wish the air from.
The center vent wheels (3 on the dash, should be rolled right for wide open).
The little recirc picture will recirculate inside air. The "O" is OFF.
Heat works the same, just raise the temperature.
HOPE THIS HELPS and your system doesn't need work.
