hi i am a new member and i have just bought a 1992 500sl it has a intermitant non start fault , dash all lights up and it starts straight away other times dash lights up and dead at key ? some times when it does not start i turn the key on and off a few/or a lot of times then suddenly it burst into life ! tried waggling gear stick when it does not start but makes no difference any common issues with this model ?

i had a similar problem and it turned out to be the start switch. it would guit working at the most inoppertune times and got progressively worse. I thought it was the starter to begin with, so I changed that first. I assume it is ok after it starts.? if so my guess is the switch. a dealer should charge about $125 for the part and no more than 3 hrs labor. autohausaz has them for $105. ask other mercedes owners to help find a good honest technician or subscribe to alldata or get the service manuals for your car. the more you know the more you'll save.
