Which W126 should I buy?
Hey guys,
I'm new to this list. I've been thinking of buying a W126-model MB when I come home from college this summer. For financial reasons, I'm giving serious thought to getting a diesel. (I guess I'm at an advantage since the noise/smell doesn't bother me).
What I wanted to know was whether there is any significant difference between getting an 86/87 300SDL or a 90-91 350SDL. I know the 350 is slightly bigger, with a bit less horsepower but more torque. I've also heard that the 350 engine is less reliable (something about connecting rods and heavy oil-burning). I'm not sure if this is true... Which of these cars should I look for? Does one have anything over the other?
Also, I guess I'm not opposed to a 300/420/560 SEL, if one of them has something that puts it far beyond the others. Power is important, of course. But reliability is paramount.
Thanks!

the 86 &87 SDL's are awesome, but there is nothing wrong with the older 5 cylinders (I have one of each). Stay away from the 350SDL's the rumors are true. You will get a nicer interior in the 350, but you can either put the new seats into an old car, or old engine into the newer car.

RE: Which W126 should I buy?
Dear Sir,
I have had Mercedes for over 20 years and my 1982 300SD was the best car I have ever had. Your right, the 350 is more troublesome. The 3.0L that is in the 300SD has been around forever. Easy to work on and parts available. Great car.
Thanks.

Personally, I'd go with the 6 cylinder 1986/1987 300SD or SDL if I was buying a diesel Mercedes. They are pretty quiet compared to most of the older ones. Just make sure that if you ever let anyone else drive your car and refill it MAKE SURE THEY REMEMBER IT IS A DIESEL.
Then as far as on the gasoline side, and getting okay gas mileage, the 300SE/L or even the 420SEL is a good choice. The 560SEL burns a little more but is more powerful and have more options at the expense of gas mileage. And all these cars are reliable as long as maintence is followed. My uncle has a 1990 300SE with over 330,000 that runs perfect. He still drives it from Atlanta to Boston with no hesitation or problems.
