Default SMOG Failed Problem

My 96-S500 will not pass Smog due to engine light on. Mechanic said there's a value inside of the Engine caused this and it will cost over $1,500 min. to repair. This process require removing top part of engine to get to it.

Thats a lot of $$ and not event sure if this process will resolve/pass smog. It could be something else. Mechanic can't guarantee.

I either cough out for the cost of the repair or get rid of this S-500.

Any Advise?

i kind of doubt that the engine needs to come apart to resolve the problem. what codes are they? clear the codes out and then drive again for 100 miles. if light stays off...then get the smog test done again. try that first.

them problem you may be having is your air injection ports may be pluged there notorious for doing that on those 1996 v8(119) of them many that i have personally done you only have to pull the right side(passengers) cylinder head off. then you must pull the exust valves out and clean the injection ports. is what these injection ports do is allow the air pump to inject air into the exust system and create a lean reading on the front o2 sensor this is how the engine control module checks that system.

you must first get the system proper dianosis of the system you can actually pull up a screen in the computer that will activate the the air pump and moniter the voltage of the o2 sensor if the o2 sensor drops below 80mv the system is working fine. how ever there are many other problem that it could be from as simple as a broken vacuum hose to a bad shut off valve also or even a cracked hose. something to remember is that if the ports are pluged the shop will want to pull off both of your heads. never let them pull both only allow the right side this is the only side i have ever seen plug. i have done this job over 80 times and never have i ever seen the left side plug.

if you can get the exact code that the engine light is throwing that will help me out alot
