Hello, I have a 2000 S 500 and I've been working out of town for the last 2 years. I haven't driven the car or even started it at least in the last 6-8 months. I am home this weekend and will attempt to hook the battery back up and start the car. Is there anything I should be worried about with the engine and transmission oil, and the gasoline in the car that's been sitting in it for a long time? Should I have all the fluids changed before I start it? I don't want to mess anything up with the engine with old fluids. Also, last time I was home there was rust on the rotors...should I be worried that it will mess up the pads? Any other rust issues that I should be looking for?

Yeah you'll be ok, I agree make sure you change the oil but you can start the car....not always a great idea to let your car sit for so long without starting it but sometimes you've gotta do what you gotta do. Usually i would use an additive to my gas, maybe something like Lucas tune-up in a bottle, but that's just what I would do, you may want to get more info from the dealer but I use it about every 3,000 ml and not a problem with it.

 

Depends on where car was parked/stored. Inside temperature controlled, dry no problem. Outside big temperature swings, rain, snow could be a problem - I would change all fluids - full service. Speaking from experience I left a vehicle off and on for a few years, not and MB mind you, I have been repairing things that normally wouldn't go had it been driven.

 

Yes things do become dry- rotted and fluids probably begin to break down after all that amount of time, hoses are probably the worst of it along with fuel and oil....

 

8 months is nothing for Mercedes. Most of the fluids are synthetic and the degradation time period is much longer then for conventional fluids. If it was inside of a garage, the surface rust on rotors is very normal (even after week or two) not deep and pads will wipe it off in the first few stops (they will make little noise) but you could take the wheels off and use steel wire brush or remove rotors out and any NAPA will cleaned them up for you. Let the car fully warm up when you start it for the first time before taking off with it. Temperature swings may be big but very slow and therefor no water condensation occurs.
