Default ABS assembly for S430

My S430 2000 was just diagnosed(by a dealer)with need of replacing ABS assembly wanting $1,800(parts and labor). My first question is knowing that they charge 1,500 for pump only, what else need to be replaced if anything.
I also found 2 ABS pumps on e-Bay for couple hundred dollars each. One of them is described as a fit for year 2000, 2001 and 2002. The other one is fit for 2001 and 2002 but not 2000?? How is this possible that parts are interchangable in one direction only. If pump is replaced, does it need any programing? How about module? If any of you has access to vin # could you please tell me if assembly taken of the car #WDBNG83J73A349240 will fit the car with #WDBNG70J4YA065814?
Has anyone possibly replaced ABS from 2000 with ABS from 2002 or any other without or with problems?
Thanks: Dan

So you accept that the ABS modulator requires replacement!

If so on what basis. The garage says so? I would want to see the evidence or the explanation!

These components can and do go wrong but a very large percentage are changed out unnecessarily.
Best way to determine what part you require is to go to the dealer and look in the parts catalogue. This will give part no for your model and compatibility info. All MB parts of this type are marked with the full part number.
eBay is a good source of parts BUT I wouldn't trust eBay info wrt compatibility.....and how can you be sure that the "sold" part will be a good one. Take care!

My advice is start at the beginning. What are the symptoms of your problem and what does a MB Quick Test On Board Diagnostics test give you (ask for a hard copy). If this confirms that the modulator is faulty then looks like they gave good info but at this cost I would double check and get the evidence to support a change is required. Presumably you have had the ABS warning light come on. This can come on for MANY reasons and the modulator is certainly NOT at the top of the list.

Good Luck.

Interested in your feedback.

Stuart.
