Had a great family vacation with 2001 ML320 and was driving back home from San Francisco to Los Angeles. About 200 miles away, the enging seemed have a problem while driving, the gas pedal wouldn't do anything, so we had to pull on the shoulder. After that, when tried to start the enginge, it would engange, you can hear the engine starts with low RPM, feels like the engine is shaking, then dies....

called the towing truck and towed to nearest town, parked the car in local garage and asking this question in the motel. I would like to know what the possible cause of this before I talk to the mechanic in the morning.

First have them check the gas pressure for fuel starvation. Then air intake for air starvation. Last CPS Crankshaft position sensor for overheating and malfunction.
I hope the main reason of this forum is to help out each other, otherwise it has no reason for existance!

sounds like fuel sending unit/pump under the rear seat. or alternator failure

 

Yes, it was fuel pump. Had to get that replaced.....
