Hi,
My wife's 2001 ML 320 is sometimes killing when she tries accelerating from a stop, ie, at a stop light etc. This can be pretty disconcerting... No check engine lights are on and it seems to run fine once it gets going. This problem comes and goes. Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to check out?

How many miles on it? All regular maintenance like air filter and plugs up to date? If all good then I would guess CPS (crankshaft position sensor) or throttle position sensor or intermitent fuel delivery. You can rent a scanner (from autozone for 30 days for free) and drive with it connected to your system then take reading or save data on it when it dies out. That will give you all info needed to diagnose the problem.
