Transmission disengages in cold weather
The 4-speed automatic in my 1994 E320 wagon is acting up again this winter. When I put it in "D" after a cold start in very cold weather and then start off in first gear, it will sometimes come out of gear within a few feet. Possibly it is trying to shift to second and doesn't quite make it?? To get moving again I usually have to stop, shut the engine off and restart, though once or twice it corrected itself when I shifted to "N" and then back to "D" without a restart. After I do this, everything returns to normal. The car has 182,000 on it and the tranny has been serviced religiously according to the book with MB AT fluid and otherwise performs fine. Fluid level checks OK and it doesn't smell burned. Any thoughts?
