Default RE: Synthetic Oils

You can replace the oil with synthetic and have no disadvantage. The current premium oils are superior to even those available in 1997, both mineral and synthetic. There are fewer differences also in performance between mineral and synthetic oils, especially since the hydrocracking of mineral oil makes it less likely to break down.

The main consideration should be whether the oil you use conforms to the latest and highest rating, which usually reflects passing a tougher standard. I would not recommend extending the drain interval past that recommended by Mercedes and would stick with Mercedes recommended oils and viscosities.
