Default Oils ain't Oils, Sol!

Living here in the sunny land of Oz I was wondering if there is any benefit of using 0w-40w oil. Would it be better to up it to 10w-50w considering the temp ranges from +10c to +50c? Also, would changing from Mobil 1 ($AUS75.00 for 5 litres) to Shell Helix ($AUS35.00 for 5 litres) be detrimental to the engine?

thanks for any ideas and advice

Switching over to higher viscosity and thicker oil may result in little worst gas millage.
In 10,000 miles the $40 saving on oil may be spend on extra gasoline.
May be not, this is just my way of thinking. Shell Helix is good oil, but I don't think it's as good as Mobil1 European Formula.
