Thanks for the reply Sleepwalker, yes the rheostat. I read in other areas and it kind of explained the procedure but I was not able to pull out the insturment panel, I only was able to get it to move about 1/4 of a inch. I just dont want to do any damage to the spedometer gauge. I have a 93 400e.

do not pull it out yet.
first unclip the speedometer cable from retaining clip.
remove the footwell (front cover) on driver's side. just on top of those pedals, you will see the cable.
after unclipping it, you can pull the instrument cluster with enough space to detach the cable.
(sorry for my bad english, i hope you get the point)

you only need to lift the car up, and you will see the fuel filter somewhere on the rear half of the car. someti,mes there is a covering on it (like a black plastic box), on other version it's just exposed and can easily be seen.
just be very careful in jacking it up and of gasoline spill. it's quite hot on the skin.
