Default Radiator Fan Removal problem

'92 300E 4matic....The special tool wont fit in the place I think its supposed to go....and the problem is that I can't get the bottom screw off the distributor cover so I can see because someone stripped it apparently long ago....So I need to do "A" to do "B" and need to do "B" so I can do "A"....I can't figure out why the tool won't fit. Its the right size for the hole, but its like the hole is not far enough away from the back of the timing cover for me to get the tool in....the hole is almost partially over part of the cover. Anyone else have problems using this tool?!

Default Special tool?

** Newbie Alert **
I just registered. Searched for 300E radiator fan related issues. This was the closest match so far.

I recently acquired a '93 300E 4Matic. Previous owner believed there was a short in the drivers door because the fuse running driver window, sunroof, etc blew frequently when the radiator fans are on, leading to over-heating issues.

To buy time for tracking down the short, I wired in a lighted rocker to a new relay that only powers the fans. When the engine is warm, it is consistently blowing the 20A fuse/breaker in this new circuit. I believe I found the problem area....

Is there a special tool I have to get in order to remove the fans? I need to determine if one or both are faulty.

Any direction on this is appreciated. TIA
