Electric Radiator Fan

Default Electric Radiator Fan

I've been thinking that a good way to increase my '82 240D's BHP would be the removal of the factory belt-driven fan and the installation of an electric fan. Has anyone here done this on their 240? I know that the increase wouldn't be tremendous, but with only 67 HP to begin with every little bit helps.

Some of the fans I've researched have expensive thermo units, but I was thinking about making my own. I have a new Wahler fan switch leftover from an Audi Fox I used to own. If I take a small section of 1.5" tubing and weld in a bung for the fan switch I can fit the tube assembly in the upper radiator hose. Then, I'll wire up a standard 4 terminal Bosch relay to run the system.

I dealt with the radiator on a 240 d once. The sensor *thermometor) and switch broke. The factory oem replacment was wikid expensive, and the car lived in florida. We decided to overide and remove the sensor switch and just use a toggle instead. Each time you turn the car on you must turn the radiator on too. Its pretty interesting. Works fine though.

Why not wire the fan to be ignition on...you do not have to turn on and off each time.

I considered that but this way is a milloin times easier. and, like I said it wasin florida so it easily overheated in hte hotness. haveing hte readiatro on so often really helped. many folks do this when they add SVO systems to deal wiht the extra heat.

When my auxillary fan resistor went on the fritz my car would over-heat when using the A/C. My solution instead of digging into the resistor was to just ground the wire that goes to the temp sensor at the thermostat. Now my fan runs whenever the car is on. Truely a 1 minute fix for a fan that wasn't working.
