Muffler issue with 94 E320. Ideas/thoughts
Hi - My 94 E320 has a split in the center muffler. I have received several estimates for well over $750.00 - OUCH!! I have been told the rear muffler has to be replaced if the center muffler is replaced.
I would prefer not to spend that much $$ on a muffler.. Does anyone have any thoughts about going to a Tuffy or Midas repair shop to have the muffler work completed...? If it is not an OEM part, do you think the car will be louder, etc??
Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated!
Thanks,
Andrew

how big is the split? if its not too big then you can mend it yourself...or you can even have a welder reweld it together. i know a guy down here in Houston who would do that for alot cheaper than 750.
Is that the price quate by dealer or independent mechanic. I know OE muffler is not cheap. Here is another option by OE on line and and have indepentdent muffler shop put it on. One place I buy part on line is www.autohuasaz.com

A lot of people will tell you that you need to replace both the resonator and the muffler, stating that MB no longer manufactures these parts separately. But don't believe the hype!
You can get a resonator from GermanStar.com for $195.00. Take it to your install guy and it may cost you 25 or 30 bucks...maybe 40. "Patchwork"...well, just remember...that's what it'll be..."patchwork." Best to simply replace the resonator. The part number is: 1244912100.
Best to you.
