My '92 300e is at 260K miles and running strong. No major repairs to either the motor or the tranny, only maintenance.

Hello, this is my first post and first day as a member of this site. I received a nice welcome and thanks!

I just acquired a used 1992 Mercedes Benz E300. I have minimal knowledge of these cars, but cant wait until I gain a bit of assurance.

I could use some information on what the difference of an E300 and the 300 E is. Mine is a 3.0L (6cyl) automatic. My insurance asked if it was a 4-Matic and I have no idea.

I was wondering what the life of this car should be under good normal maintenance. What about the transmission? Or anything else for that matter. This car is a 1992 model and has 127,000 miles on the OD, so did I get a good buy at $4,100? The body is great, not even a door ding. The interior is just as good, being the previous owner was a non-smoking elder gentlelman. All interior electronics work flawless, and not a single evidence of the electric sunroof leaking. The only crack in the interior is on the woodgrain plastic part of the console by the electric window buttons. The engine bay is clean. There is a small amount of oil leakage on the front of the engine. It may be from a leak in the frontal part of the valve cover. After driving a bit,and the engine warms up, ithas a small hesitation when taking off from a traffic light but not all the time. Thats all I know about it so far.

So what do you think I could expect out of this one? Or should I make my own post? Sorry for jumping in on your post.

I had a 1985 300SD with 170,000 miles.Sold it to a guy now it has over 200,000 on it. My cousin many years ago had a 240D that he bought new and ran it 280,000 miles. Gave it to his son who ran it 400,000 and sold it becasue he got board driving the same car for so long. A friend of mine has a 1994 C220 with 125,000, my neighbor one of his many many cars is a 2003 C230 Kompressor that has about 120,000 on it. My neighbor at my summer home in Florida has a 1995 C280 with way over 100,000 on it. But for right now for Mercedes. I have the 420sel with 109,000 on it, 2002 E320 Sport with 65,000 and a 2000 C280 Sport with 72,000 on it.

In the 1960's Mercedes dicided to try and capture the Tazi business and started to build cars for that trade. The first purpose built body was the 114. There were earlier cars put to that use but they were not built from the ground up for it.

They sold well, so when they introduced the 123 they put twice as many welds in to give the bodies more strength. They then recomemded the diesel engines be rebuilt every 500,000 km and the car replaced at 2,000,000 km.

I put 1,400,000 km on a 1981 240 D and then sold it to someone who was going to rebuild the entire thing.

The care you give it is the thing. Do not scimp on the maintaince.

Want to know if your 123 car was built for this from the factory? The dash will have a scooped out spot in the middle of it where the speaker should be. This is to hold the fare register. You see a lot of these cars advertised as a 123 "limo" as Mercedes made some streached bodies for the trade. These cars were never imported to the US by Mercedes, but they are nice as they do have a lot of legroom in the rear!

This has been one of the best, old threads that I have read. Great stories and great owners. My wife swears by Honda and her family can't understand why I don't drive an American pickup truck. Though I would love one on the weekends, I can't bring myself to drive every day in anything else than my E320. It's quite, smooth, powerful, efficient, great looking and safe. The combo is rare indeed. Keep the stories going. A few months ago I was about to pull the plug on the car because of some ball joints/ bearings issues. After I learned that these items were all original equipment, I decided that was proof enough of how well built the W210 really is. I just finished doing my annual paint clean / wax today and can't wait to drive it to the Irish pub tonight. Keep the stories going!!!

Sold my 1982 240D with 315K miles on the clock. The body was not the best but the motor ran just fine. In fact, it ran so well I'm convinced that with proper care it was good for another 100K miles without any issue.
