I knew a man who bought a diesel Mercedes in 1955 and used it as taxicab.I don't know what model it was,but it did 1 million miles on one engine before he sold it.There 3 drivers working it so it never got cold. The body was a bit rough when he sold it but it still ran well and he got a good price for those days.

True story:
My daily driver: 1988 300e...just turned 280,000 miles. Runs very strong (will do the top end in a few years...). Can count on this one covering 300-500 miles per week.
My back-up: 1976 300d...178,000 miles. Runs perfectly(won't need anything major for another 300,000 miles or so I figure. Can count on this one covering 300-500 miles per week too.
When I drive these things, I tell myself "when I get rid of this thing...I'm going to get another one."
Safe driving to all.

My uncle has a 300Se 1990 with over 300,000 miles on it and still running strong as if it was new.
My 89 560SEL is just over the 200,000 mark and it runs better than some people's so called dealer maintained cars that has less than 15% of the mileage.

Only car that I notice that can compare to the durability of the Mercedes Engine is the classic BMW engines and the 1996-up engines of the 7-series (once you get passed them electrical glitches.)

as far as engine wise, they are still pretty sturdy. It's just the electrical problems that happens on the newer ones and some people confuse electrical problems with mechanical problems. Till this day it's rare to hear a Mercedes blowing an engine or rod, or gaskets unless it was improperly maintained which oin that case would happen to any car from the Escort to the Bentley GT.
But not many people regreat buying a Mercedes unless they didn't do their homework. In fact I hear more people say that they wished they would've bought a Mercedes than anything.
