e320 stuck in first
First reset the car.---with the key out---- Unhook the neg cable and step on the brakes for 1 minute and then hook up the cable again.Resync you windows and other systems by following the procedure in your manual.
did you spill anything into the console shift area?
do you have a check engine light on?
try the above, anwser the questions, and you can clean the unit or purchase a used unit from a bone yard.
Before you do anything else try those things, report back and if needed the next step would be to go to a shop and get it diagnosed to make sure it is the module and not some other system kicking it into limp mode.

Dronsfield.
OK...but expensive.
Stuart (Stafford UK)
Radio reception poor with HRW.
Guess your aerial is in rear screen. If so the cause is usually the amplifier which is mounted adjacent to the rear screen above the head lining. the module may be faulty / connection corrosion or a bad earth connection at/adjacent to the amplifier.

I have exactly the same problem with my E320 CDI Turbo 2001 W210. I tried to reset it by disc the negative and depressing the brake pedal for one minute but to no avail. It is still stuck in first gear.
I took it to an indie and after it going on the computer they said it was either of two things showing up a) the diff ratio in the gearbox & b) the gearbox ecu.
They didn't mention the gearbox module selector. I am just wondering if the module selector controlls the diff ratio???
Please let me know what the dealer says about your problem and I'll do the same. Maybe we can compare notes.
Best of Luck Tony

IMHO the first step is to check trans oil level.
Not as simple as it sounds since no dipstick is provided.
You either need to make one (details on this site if you search) or get the dealer / Indie to do this. Unlikely to fix but first step.
Likely cause is selector module but I would change the oil next if the car has done circa 100k+ since new (MB) oil helps stop "sticky" valves in the trans. All depends whether fault is intermittent or continuous. The lubricity of the oil drops off with age and a "tight" sticky valve can get stuck tempporarily.
Oil change will not be wasted if at 100k+ but use MB oil as ohlord states.
@ tmira. "diff ratio"? Unusual code. Must indicate that eng / road speed ratio is implausible since diff is not part of the auto trans box.. Since diff ratio is fixed (unless of course you have changed wheels and tyres for a different size) This seem to confirm that the ECU (most likely speed input) is bad and the box is actually intentionally holding onto first.
