Default E320 Radio?

I have a 1994 E320 wagon, and I'm having radio problems, and my dad just wants to replace it. What would you suggest as a good unit which won't look too flashy, but is also fairly nice at the same time. I would also like to replace the speakers if you know of any brands that work well with this car.
Thanks for you time,
-matt

Default RE: E320 Radio?

I've got a pet peave.
The older MB radios are notorious for being problematic. Replacement radios are usually, by far, cheaper, more reliable and better sounding.
That said..... I think they look just terrible, and incorrect in a Mercedes.
Fact is, my 95 E320 OEM radio/casette/cd really does sound great.
I am a designer with great sensitivity towards consistent, harmonious, and well integrated design. The OEM radio captures that. Even the radio's buttons match the hvac buttons. A new ultra modern radio simply is incongrous with the "period" design of the interior.
Personally? I would never replace any Mercedes part with anything other than original equipment. I even replaced my 1970 280sl radio with a period correct radio.
So.....I'd search Ebay, they're easy to come buy, or send it out for repair. There are plenty of MB radio restorers listed in Hemmings.
I've just purchase another Mercedes, and one of the factors important to me in choosing the "right one" was finding a car with the correct, original radio.
Sorry, just my personal pet peave.
