E320 CDI Reliability
Hello all,
I need some reassurance on my purchase of an E 320 CDI for my wife. I purchased the car two days ago for our anniversary. We looked at Jaguar and Lexus. My wife fell in love with MB and we opted for the CDI because of the mileage. However, I have since looked the car up on JD Power, Consumer reports and the internet. I cannot find anyone with much good to say. Reliability is terrible, repeated breakdowns etc. Is this true? Have I made a poor decision?
Thanks

I have a two year old E320CDi (UK resident). Only had it 2 months. Only real problem I have had is a tyre blowout so far. I have got a really annoying noise from the engine compartment which I assume is the commpression of the power steering assist (progressive power steering). Haven't asked about this yet.
When I was recovered to home after the tyre blowout by the Mercedes Roadside Assitance, he told me there were two real concerns that he knew about.
1. Fuel rail modification
This is something your mercedes dealer will do if you complain that you have a starting problem or the car keeps cutting out.
2. Comand System software upgrade.
This seems to involve about a 4 hour software upgrade that is performed when you take your car in for a service. They don't tell you they have
have done it but it is a pretty necessary item. Apparently, the Sat Nav system dies every so often and can only be reserected by this software
upgrade.
Other than these two points I couldn't get any more info out of the guy.
My suggestion would be that every Mercedes owner should spaek to one of these roadside repair specialists. Who better than them to know where all the faults lie.
Have fun!

Incidentally, do you have a Comand system in yours?
If you own a DVD recorder and has successfully recorded a DVD and played it in the Comand System DVD player I would be interested to know whether it is capable of playing +R or -R type DVDs. I am about to buy a recorder and need to know the type.
