Default 91 300e vibration at idle

Okay, I know someone else has to have had this same problem. My car does it, and so does my friend's car (which is the exact same model and year as mine)

I have a 91 300e with 105,000 miles on it. It runs great otherwise, but it vibrates at idle, and even more so when I put it in gear. Once I start driving though, and get past about 800rpm, it's smooth.

Like I said, my friend's car does the same exact thing, and one of his motor mounts is actually broken. I'm wondering if my two front engine mounts and worn, and thus they're vibrating through the frame.

Also, another guy I work with said those should be oil filled mounts, is that correct?

Thanks!

engine mount on W124 are oil filled but you can not refill them. The only solution is to replace those mounts.
You'll be amazed how smooth your engine run at idle with new engine mounts. At the same time, I suggest you replace the transmission support.
They are cheap (about $50.00ea) and can all be replaced in about an hour.

yup sounds like motor mount problems. mb actually makes a special tool to check these mounts. its like 15 bucks. another way to check them is get a bolt that has a 13mm head on it (that means a 13 mm scocket is used to turn the bolt) and try to fit the head of the bolt between the motor mount and the frame if it dosent fit then you have bad motor mounts if it fits then there good. yes they are oil filled for vibration dampening and will pour all over your arm when removed if your not careful

You mean they're not sealed? Like when you take them off, they can spill the oil?

Anyway, thanks for the information jackd and vytamenc! I've got new motor mounts on the way, along with a new rear muffler (the Wagner that someone put on here before got some unnecessary ventilation!) :-)

Update...

I installed two new mufflers (the center and the rear) which made the car super quiet! The vibration was still there... that is, until I changed out the motor mounts! WOW!!! It's like a new car! I can't believe what a difference they made! No more vibration.... you can't even hardly tell that the thing is running.

Anyway, hopefully this information can help someone who has the same problem.

Later

Replace your engine mount all 3 please. There are 2 of them at the engine and one at transmission end. Get OE only for this part. If you dont buy OE mount it will come back and huant you again. I will leave this job for mechanic.

"Leave the job to a mechanic"? Bah! If you read my previous post, you'll notice that I replaced both motor mounts, along with the center and rear muffler myself. Just get a good Mercedes shop manual, and anyone that's mechanically inclined can do the job.

Peace!
