Default 1984 190 e will not stay running without foot on accelerator

I have a 1984 mercedes 190 e and i thought the fuel pump wasnt working so i checked it out and it was, but the fuel relay switch was bad so i replaced it. now it will start and run as long as you want it to but usually only starts with starting fluid. But it will run as long as you keep your foot above idle on the accelerator.. Im really confused on whats going on if you let off the accelerator it just dies, i messed with the idle and nothing seems to really help you have to keep it at 1000 rpms just to stay running.. any advice? anyone ever have this problem?.. oh and by the way it has been sitting for a year will not run below 2000 rpms the air cleaner is not onthe motor could this have something to do with it.. Anyone with any advice would be greatly appreciated
