Default dead pixels, replace cluster?

I just picked up my CLK430 a few days ago and it came with the temp and clock/gear portion almost completely unreadable. A friend of mine gave me another cluster from one of his prior projects but I am worried about putting in my car. Does the car display the miles from a computer somewhere or is it simply whatever is stored in the cluster. I would like to fix the temp/clock but I do not want to risk having my car display the wrong mileage. thanks!

unfortunately, if you simply replace the cluster, it will not bear the true mileage of your car, but of the cluster you install. You can get YOUR cluster repaired. Check out this site:

All apologies but I really doubt that if you replace the instrument cluster it will display the miles of the new cluster. That is saying that if you want to sell your car for a higher price go by a new instrument cluster. Because it's new it would have 0 miles on it. I may be wrong but I doubt it.
